This morning as I lay in bed with Simone and the computer, sipping green tea and answering emails, a soft song wafted up the stairwell. Simone perked up her fluffy ears and looked at me quizzically.
"It's only Carmax," I assured her. We've taken to calling Carmen, Carmax, Carkeys, Carpool or whatever when she fades out. It's her alter ego. Carmen's as deaf as a door nail so it 's not as if she knows what you're saying.
Normally, the siren song is more of a mournful wail. Today, it was different. Melodic. It sounded like she was forming a tune.
Awwwwwoooooo wi woooooooo! She sang over and over again.
And that's when Zali chimed in. WOO Woo Woo!
It was as if he were keeping the beat to Carmax's tune. By now, I should have gone to Carmax and clapped my hands (the only sound that seems to get her attention) to get her to stop, but I was rather enjoying it.
Eventually, they finished serenading or Carmen came back into focus. I heard the scritch, scritch hop of her making her way up the stairs. "Thanks for the new track!" I proffered as she shuffled past my bed on the way to her own.
Carmen pulled herself into her bed and flopped down. She turned to me and smiled. Zali begged to join us.
Show's over, I guess.
